New Energy Source for Cardiac Implantable Electric Device
Joung Bo-Young

Abstract
Recently, many cardiac implantable electric devices (CIED) have been used in specific patients. Artificial cardiac pacemakers significantly contribute to the regulation of heart rate by using electrical impulses for contracting the heart muscles of patients with sick sinus syndrome or heart block. The implantable cardioverter defibrillator is used for defibrillation. However, owing to the limited lifespan of the battery, replacement surgery for the artificial pacemaker implanted under the chest skin should be performed every 7 to 10 years. The batteries that power implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) differ from those used to power implantable pacemakers and most other implantable devices, in that, they must deliver much higher power. Enhancing the battery life is thus a critical issue to assure longer working time of the implanted pacemakers and to increase the replacement cycle. This paper will present several attractive approaches to address this challenge.
